A very special group of men were recognized at half-time of the Sherman – McKinney North football game recently. In 1964, the Fred Douglass Panthers advanced to the finals of the Prairie View Interscholastic League and won the state championship by defeating Conroe High School 32-18. This is the 50th anniversary of that remarkable feat and is the only state championship football team in Sherman’s history. The team returned to the state championship game the following year but was defeated by Conroe 33-12.
Ten former members of the team were able to attend and were presented Sherman Booster Club caps by President Jimmy Mrozinski. 16 members of the championship team are deceased, including Vernon Holland, who went on to become a college All-American and a decade long pro in the NFL. Head Coach of the 1964 championship team was Ed Hunt, a long time coach for the Sherman ISD, but he was unable to attend. The appreciative home crowd gave the men a loud, standing ovation. Well done, Panthers!!
